Fort Drum Soldiers Train With New Technology

Around 3,000 Fort Drum soldiers are training in the field this week and testing out some cutting edge technology.

It's called Capability Set 13, a new communication system that provides a portable mobile connection for deployed soldiers.

It allows units to use tracking devices on troops as well as securely share information and pictures on missions.

"Having this capability, where I can take the ability to command and control the brigade on the move, that gives us the ability to extend our reach even as we reduce our presence," said Colonel Sam Whitehurst, commander of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

The 3rd BCT is expected to deploy in the coming months.

It will be the second unit to use this new technology in Afghanistan.
