Fort Drum Troops Get Ready For Afghanistan Deployment

With the arrival of the new year comes the pending deployments of soldiers from Fort Drum.

Elements of the 10th Mountain Division are getting ready for a nine month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Their role will be advising Afghan military units so they can eventually conduct their own security operations.

"Our 1st and 2nd brigades are sending elements, very large elements, not the entire brigades, but large elements organized as advisory teams and security teams and support teams for the advisory teams," said Major General Stephen Townsend, commander of the 10th Mountain Division.

The first elements of these security force assistance brigades will begin leaving Fort Drum later this month.
