Friday: In Waddington, A Puzzling Theft

Shirley Belgarde of Waddington spent Thursday hard at work, building a vegetable stand.

That's because sometime Wednesday night someone stole the vegetable stand - a large desk, really - that she's used for years.

"Everyone downtown is simply amazed over it, just amazed," she said Friday. " 'What?' they say. Even younger children, a young fellow at the hardware store, 'You got to be kidding me?'"

The stand was taken from the yard of Shirley's friend, Mary Brown, on Lincoln Avenue. Shirley has used the spot for five years to sell vegetables from her garden.

"The table sits right out straight from my door near the road. So when I open my outside door out there, no table," Mary told 7 News reporter Matt McClusky.

There were no vegetables on the table when it was left for the night Wednesday, so the thief or thieves got the stand, and nothing more. (The replacement stand is shown in our picture.)

A state trooper was called to investigate.

""She just came on duty and she says, 'This is new to me,' and, well, it's new to us too. We didn't expect anybody to steal our table!" Mary said.

As for the replacement, it's not going anywhere, at least if Shirley has anything to say about it.

"I'm going to put it back down there and I'm going to buy a length of chain and chain it to the leg and to one of Mary's trees."
