Friday: North Country Drivers Doubt Cell Phone Ban

North country motorists are skeptical about a recommendation from the federal government to ban the use of all electronics, including 'hands free' cellphones, while driving.

New York state law already bans texting and talking while behind the wheel.

However, this week the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended a nationwide ban on the use of all electronic devices while driving.

The NTSB can't force states to go along, but has evidence that all electronics are a distraction that slows response time.

It's just common sense to police who now enforce the cell phone rules.

"It takes away from the driver's attention. They're paying more attention to their phone than the road," said officer Michael Maney of the Watertown police department.

All true, drivers acknowledge. But the equipment is hard to resist.

"We know what we're supposed to do, but we're spoiled by technology unfortunately," said Frank Monnett of Watertown.

"Everybody uses their cell phones, I mean, it's just the way you're connected to everybody," said Nelson Esmurria, also of Watertown.
