Gas Prices Actually Drop Before Holiday Weekend

"Up down, up down, up down, it's crazy," said Wyndell Nowlin, who's fed up with the prices at the pump.

Gas prices have been all over the place in the past months. 

For now, prices in Watertown sit in the $3.80 range and analysts say they will continue to drop.

"I think we can see fuel prices come down incrementally at least in the next couple weeks," said Gregg Laskoski, an analyst with Gasbuddy.com.

Laskoski says this projection is contrary to a popular conception.

He says the idea that gas prices rise over Memorial Day weekend because travelers are hitting the road for the holiday, is a myth.

"Certainly there's a bit of an uptick in U.S. consumption, but overall, it's not terribly dramatic," he said.

Last month, analysts said that gas prices would be well over $4 by now, but at the Mobil station on Washington Street, regular gas was $3.89 per gallon.

That begs the question: do these guys really know what they're talking about?

"We do our best based on on available data, price trends, pricing histories and so on. It's more of an art than a science, I'll say that," said Laskoski.

Despite the best efforts of analysts, consumers at the pump are growing skeptical of projections.

"We'll wait and see. We only got a couple more days. I don't see it going down at least for now," said Nowlin.
