Gas Prices Are Down...What's Up With That?

Tools

The roller coaster ride of gas prices is - for now - heading in the right direction.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Watertown is $3.57 a gallon, compared to last year when prices were more than $4.

"We're talking about considerable savings versus last year and we'll probably keep that line going," said Patrick DeHaan, senior analyst for GasBuddy.com.

To top it off, prices in the Watertown area are below the state average - which is about 10 cents more at $3.68 a gallon.

Analysts say that's a big shift in the trend, especially considering the time of year.

"Usually gas prices are going up this time of year as we approach the Memorial Day weekend and so it certainly is a buck in the trend that we see prices heading downward," said DeHaan.

With gas prices so unseasonably low, the question now is will they jump before Memorial Day weekend?

"I hope they stay low because I'm planning a trip to go out of state this Memorial Day weekend," said local driver Cody Outfleet.

"I hope we have lower gas prices so that people can enjoy traveling, taking vacations with their families, and doing things that are affordable," said another local motorist Maureen Sirois.

Only time will tell, but analysts say come the holiday weekend, gas prices should stay close to what they are now - fluctuating about a dime at most.

That's good news for travelers who will need to gas up before hitting the road.
