Gas Station Operator Fined $46K

MGN Online

The operator of nine north country gas stations, including two in St. Lawrence County, has been fined $46,000 by the federal Environmental Protection Agency and directed to install new fuel leak detection equipment.
The fine against Adirondack Energy Products of Malone, which operates Mountain Mart gas stations in Canton and Massena, was part of a negotiated civil settlement with the EPA.

A 2010 inspection of the Massena Mountain Mart on South Main Street found that a kerosene release sensor had been in an "alarm" status for several months and the company had failed to report a kerosene leak.

The company also was found to lack overfill protection equipment on its gas pumps at the Canton location.

Adirondack Energy president Bruce Monette did not return our calls for comment.

Adirondack also operates gas stations in Malone, Moira and Plattsburgh.
