"Significant" layoffs could hit the General Brown Central School District.

That's according to Superintendent Steve Vigliotti.

He said the district met with staff Thursday to discuss the school's financial situation.

"Does this mean layoffs? Yes. Will the layoffs be significant? Unfortunately, yes," said Vigliotti.

He said the district has a $1.8 million budget gap to close.

Vigliotti said it was premature to talk about how many people will be laid off because the school board has until April 22 to finalize its budget.

He said the board is looking to make cuts that would be least damaging to the instructional areas.

Vigliotti said the district has lost $5.3 million in state aid over the past three years.

7 News is attempting to reach members of the teacher's union for comment.
