Gilbert Drops Out As Republican Candidate For Congress

Tools

Joe Gilbert is no longer seeking the Republican nomination for the 21st Congressional District.

Gilbert, who quit his job as St. Lawrence County's emergency services director to run, tells 7 News he's dealing with personal issues.

"Family comes first," he said. "It wasn't about me becoming a congressman, it's about fixing the country."

Gilbert says he's unable to devote 100 percent of his attention to running for the seat, which is being vacated by Democrat Bill Owens.

According to Gilbert, he's still the Constitution Party's candidate for Congress and has until June 25 to decide whether to run on that line.

If Gilbert had submitted his petitions for the Republican ticket, he would have faced Elise Stefanik and Matt Doheny for the GOP nomination.
