Gilbert Resigns To Focus On Congressional Campaign

St. Lawrence County's emergency services director has resigned to devote more time to his campaign to unseat north country Congressman Bill Owens.

Joe Gilbert says his resignation is effective today (Friday).

He says while he enjoyed his county job, he now needs to give his full attention to the 21st Congressional District race.

Gilbert has led the county's emergency Services Department since May 2012 when he was hired to replace Marty Hassett.

Gilbert says he remained on the job to assist the county in applying for a substantial intercommunications grant and now intends to pick up the pace of his campaign.

"I've fought very hard for St. Lawrence County since I've been here and now I'm going to continue that fight and I'm going to fight for the entire district," said Gilbert.

County Information Technology Director Keith Zimmerman has been appointed interim director to replace Gilbert until a search committee can be formed and a new director hired.
