Feedback: Price Of Trash Pick-up Going Up In Watertown

The price of trash collection in Watertown will go up, under the terms of the newly proposed city budget.

The budget, proposed Monday night, includes a 50 cent a bag increase in the pick up charge.

The increase is the first since 1999.

A bag of trash would now cost $3. Also increasing, the charge for so-called 'totes,' the large, often wheeled trash dumpsters many people use.

"A lot has changed, from the cost of employees to the price of gasoline," said Mary Corriveau, city manager of Watertown.

Council must still approve the increase, which will take effect July 1.

Reaction to the proposed increase was mixed Tuesday.

"I already think it's quite pricey, so I'm not for it at all," said Donna Wasilewski of Watertown.

In contrast, Shirley Barber of Watertown thought the increase was ok.

"Everything else is going up, so I guess 50 cents more a bag's not gonna hurt."

The increase would raise an additional $134,000 for the city.
