Good News, Bad News For North Country Jobless Rate

The north country continued to have some of the highest unemployment rates in New York in May, according to the state Labor Department.

For the second month in a row, Lewis County had the state's second highest jobless rate - 9.3 percent.

St. Lawrence County had the fourth highest rate at 9.2 percent, while Jefferson County rounded out the top five with 9 percent.

There is a bit of good news to report - the jobless numbers dropped across the tri-county region between April and May.

In fact, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties saw their rates decrease by more than 1 percent.

Jefferson County's unemployment rate dropped .6 percent.

The counties in New York state with the highest unemployment rates include:

- Bronx County (11.2%)
- Lewis County (9.3%)
- Oswego County (9.2%)
- St. Lawrence County (9.2%)
- Jefferson County (9.0%)

The counties in New York state with the lowest unemployment rates include:

- Tompkins County (5.1%)
- Putnam County (5.8%)
- Saratoga County (5.8%)
- Rockland County (5.9%)
- Yates County (5.9%)
