Gouverneur Could Have Full-Time Police Chief Soon
The village of Gouverneur could have a full-time police chief again when the next fiscal year comes around.
It all depends on whether longtime Chief David Whitton retires by the time the new budget takes effect on June 1.
Village trustees are including money in next year's budget to add one patrolman and restore the chief's position from part time to full time.
Police department funding was cut in 2009 to reduce costs.
Chief Whitton is expected to retire soon after 40 years with the department. Village officials hinted the position won't be restored to full time until his replacement is hired.
"The number of crimes involving some break-ins and other things in the community and I think by and large the community, the taxpayers here in the village of Gouverneur, should have more public safety," said village trustee Ron McDougall.
Meanwhile, Whitton says he's not sure whether the addition of one police officer would allow for 24-7 police coverage.
But, he adds, it's a step in the right direction.
