Gouverneur Man Dies in Apparent Drowning

An apparent drowning on Trout Lake has claimed the life of a Gouverneur man. State police are awaiting autopsy results to find out just how it happened.

Officials say 55-year-old Michael Lawler was attempting to help another swimmer in distress when he went under the water Saturday afternoon.

People at a neighboring camp pulled him to shore, and attempted to resuscitate him.

Lawler was taken to EJ Noble hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.

The swimmer the man was trying to save was treated and released.
