A 14 year veteran of the Gouverneur Village Police Department has been suspended with pay while state police complete a criminal investigation into him.

The village's Board of Trustees suspended Officer Steven Young Wednesday morning following a special meeting.

Mayor Ron McDougall declined to comment on the exact nature of the investigation.

He said Young is among four officers in the department, which also includes the chief and a sergeant.

McDougall said another officer is on leave.

It's unclear if Young's position will be filled during the investigation or how long the suspension will last.

"We're cautiously optimistic the investigation will be completed in a timely fashion," said McDougall.

7 News was unable to reach Young for comment.

Young is also the chief of the Gouverneur Fire Department.

It's unclear if he will remain chief during the investigation.
