Gouverneur Rescue Squad Gets Back Tax-Exempt Status

MGN Online

The Gouverneur Volunteer Rescue Squad has gotten back its tax-exempt status.

Director of Operations Mark Deavers said he got the good news Friday.

A letter from the Internal Revenue Service said the squad's tax-exempt status is retroactive to May 15, 2013.

In November 2013, the squad announced it lost its tax-exempt status, which meant all the income it received would be taxable and donors would not be able to deduct their contributions.

The squad failed to file the proper IRS forms for three consecutive years.

The group changed leadership, hired an accounting firm, filed the delinquent tax returns and asked that its tax-exempt status be reinstated retroactively.
