Graham Asks Comptroller For Advice On Restaurant Deck
Watertown Mayor Jeff Graham is asking the state comptroller's office for help figuring out a way to let a restaurant use a city-owned deck that's attached to it.
In his letter, Graham points out that the New York Department of State has already ruled against the city letting Maggie's on the River use the deck for serving food and alcoholic beverages.
The deck is part of a series of state-grant-funded walkways and access points along the Black River known as Whitewater Park.
Maggie's on the River wants to use the deck to take advantage of being next to the river.
"We have been at a logjam for some time," the mayor wrote, "and we are halfway through another summer season in which this business is unable to utilize what in essence is a deck primarily of value to them."
Graham says he thinks a simple license agreement between the city and the restaurant would suffice, but officials are hesitating because of the Department of State ruling.
The mayor points out that other municipalities have granted licenses for private businesses to sell food and beverages in public parks.
Graham says he is asking the comptroller's office for guidance because of it's "long record of ensuring the actions of local government are consistent with the public interest."
