Gray: Power Authority Should Reopen Agreement
The state Power Authority should renegotiate the terms of its deal with St. Lawrence County and its towns, says the group that negotiated the 2003 agreement with the Power Authority.
In exchange for allowing the Power Authority's power project in St. Lawrence County to be relicensed for another 50 years, the Power Authority agreed in 2003 to provide millions of dollars and to set aside electricity for economic development.
In light of what's happened since then, it's not enough, said Masena town supervisor Joe Gray, who chairs the "local government task force," which sent a letter to the Power Authority, requesting the agreement be renegotiated..
Most important, General Motors closed its Massena plant.
"No one could forsee the collapse of General Motors as a corporation, the largest corporation the world has ever known, that's certainly a factor, cost us $13 million on our tax base," Gray said.
In addition, he said, communities in western New York got a better deal when the Power Authority relicensed the Niagara power project.
A spokesman for the Power Authority said the request to renegotiate the agreement is being considered.
