Group Helps Ex-Mercy Workers Find Jobs

A day after Mercy Care Center closed its doors in Watertown, eight employees remain on the job.

There are four housekeepers and four maintenance workers left.

Another 65 workers have been hired by Samaritan Medical Center, and three got jobs at Meadowbrook Terrace in Carthage, but 111 others are looking at unemployment.

All have been helped by an organization called the Workforce Development Institute.

"We started with computer classes...We looked at everything from first aid training all the way to HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning)," said Greg Hart, the regional director for the institute.

Seventy of Mercy's workers have taken advantage of the classes to try and make themselves more employable.
