With Thanksgiving on the way, people are showing their gratitude to veterans.

In downtown Watertown on Tuesday, the Central New York Veterans Outreach Center was giving out baskets filled with turkey, stuffing and other Thanksgiving goodies.

The organization, based out of Utica, assists veterans who are homeless or at risk of being evicted.

The center gave out more than 80 baskets to veteran and their families who expressed need.

About nine of them were from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.

"This is one way that we give to those who gave so much for us," said Courtney Crawford of the Central New York Veterans Outreach Center.

"A lot of people, I'm sure, are worse off than me, but this will really help them," said Michael Mehrbrot, who received a basket.

The Central New york Veterans Outreach Center just started outreach in the Watertown area in October.

For more information on the organization, call Kellie Drake at the center at 315-939-4535.
