Habitat for Humanity Fire Was Apparently Arson

Wednesday's fire at the Habitat for Humanity site in Watertown was apparently a case of arson.

City Fire Chief Dale Herman told 7 News the blaze was intentionally set.

The fire destroyed two Habitat storage trailers on Superior Street early Wednesday morning.

Herman said the doors to both trailers, which were usually padlocked, were wide open when firefighters arrived.

There was no heat or electricity running into the trailers, Herman said.

He also said items, including power tools, were missing from the trailers.

"It is our belief that someone possibly confiscated material from the trailers and then covered up actions by trying to set fire to them," said Herman.

According to Brian Drappo of Habitat for Humanity, the group was storing tools, a generator and other supplies for crews who were building a family home on Superior Street.

He said the fire caused $15,000 worth of damage.

"We're an easier target than normal businesses because we don't have the level of security. We're not here every day to see what's coming and going," said Drappo.

Neighbors called the fire in shortly after 4 a.m., saying they heard explosions.

Fire officials said the explosions came from equipment stored inside the trailers.
