State police have partially reopened Route 3 to traffic near Star Lake  following a head-on crash that has injured nine people - one of them critically.

The accident happened shortly after noon on Route 3 about a mile east of County Route 60.

Police said one person was critically injured and eight others were hurt.

The victims were taken to Clifton-Fine Hospital in Star Lake, police said.

According to state police, a van transporting seven Kirby vacuum cleaner sales personnel was traveling east on Route 3.

The van attempted to pass a tractor trailer when it crashed into an oncoming pickup truck with two people inside, police said.

The driver of the van, identified as 21 year old Gene Lester of Evans Mills, was critically injured.

Police said the rainy weather prevented a helicopter from responding to the scene to airlift the Lester to the hospital.

He and two other passengers in the van were transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

According to police, the highway where the accident happened is zoned for 55 miles per hour.

The driver of the pickup truck is identified as 32 year old Peter Holmes of Fulton.

His passenger was 67 year old Leslie Holmes of Fulton, believed to be Peter's father.

Police identified the passengers in the van as:

- 27 year old William Warner of Elmira

- 34 year old Cory Kelley of Lowville

- 24 year old Ashley Payeur of Elmira Heights

- 21 year old Chastity Stevens of Adams
