High Tech Law and Order

A little tool is doing big things for Adams Village Police. It's a camera that captures everything police see and hear when they're on duty.

"We really got it for assistance in DWI enforcement, because if I stop someone who's intoxicated, what better way to show they're intoxicated, than to have the public see what I see," explained Adams Village Police Officer Joseph Reff.

The police department gave 7 News the opportunity to ride along and see first hand how the camera system, made by TASER, works.

It didn't take long for Officer Reff to find someone to pull over.  Then with a click, he turns on the camera and does his job.

It was business as usual and standard procedure for Reff as he spoke to the driver he had stopped, and ticketed him for an unregistered trailer.

It isn't exactly going to make it in to an episode of 'Cops', but one look at the video Reff captured on the portable camera, and it is easy to see how the gadget can put prosecutors, the judge, and jury at the scene.

"You will be able to see why I did what I did. You should be able to recognize the threats that I saw and my liability will actually go down," Reff explained.

We talked to the Jefferson County District Attorney and she anticipates the camera is going to be helpful in convicting criminals and protecting police officers from lawsuits.

So next time you're in Adams remember: The eyes of the village police officer are upon you.
