Historic Watertown Church Might Close

It's an important part of the history of Watertown and now the Thomas Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church on Morrison Street may be history. 

The church has played an active role in the community since 1878.

However, with a dwindling congregation and no money to fix up the 103 year old church, the doors may be closed forever.

"We do have a need for the exterior and interior as far as repairing the church...We'd like some monetary support," said church trustee William Crabbe.

Crabbe is the only member of the church at the moment.

He says the church's last hope is getting a new pastor. 

Originally built to support the spiritual and social needs of African American railroad workers who settled in the Morrison Street area, the church also includes a museum paying tribute to its ties to the Underground Railroad.
