Homemade Caps and Gowns: An Elaborate Process

It'll soon be cap and gown day at Copenhagen Central School.

But for the school's two kindergarden classes, making their caps and gowns comes first.

This is a Copenhagen tradition that's been going on for generations.

First, they have to buy the fabric - in this case, pillow cases.

Then teachers and parents create the gowns, using a time-tested design.

"You measure in so much and down so much and then using pinking shears you cut here (the neck line) and cut the sleeves. And they get ironed a couple of times, and starched, and labeled and fitted, so it's quite an elaborate process," explained Copenhagen Central School teacher Cynthia Graves.

The official graduation photos will be made into buttons to be worn by proud parents on graduation night, which is set for June 16th.
