Honoring America's Veterans

In the North country, and across the country, Veterans Day it is a day to honor the men and women who have served in the United States military.

The VFW Post in Watertown was one of the many places where community members were marking the day and paying tribute to local vets. 

There were speeches, a wreath hanging, and a gun salute to honor fallen and living veterans. 

The post also recognized VFW essay winners at this ceremony.  The six students were chosen out of a pool of 99. This year's topic: "What I Would Tell America's Founding Fathers?"

The vice commander of the post says, seeing this many people come out for the event means a lot to those who have served:

"When you look at the crowd out there, it means they do recognize us, because a lot of times, I don't want to get into it, a lot of times our Vietnam Vets came back and it wasn't like it is now," said Charles Patrick, VFW Post 1400 Vice Commander.

"Now they're turning around and they're thanking the vets for a job well done," he said.

Veterans Day events like the one at the VFW are held every year on this day.

November 11, at 11 a.m., we commemorate the signing of the armistice that ended World War I, and honor the veterans who have served throughout American history, to the present day.
