Jefferson County native and Republican John Humphrey says New York's SAFE Act prompted him to run for state Assembly in the 116th district.

Humphrey made his formal announcement in Watertown Wednesday afternoon.

But Humphrey says the SAFE Act is not the only issue he plans to tackle.

"I'm concerned about education. I'm concerned about Common Core. I think the whole system of education needs to be changed and I'm concerned about the attacks on family," he said.

Cape Vincent Town Councilman John Byrne has also announced he plans to run for the seat on the Republican ticket.

Assemblywoman Addie Russell says she will be seeking re-election.
