9:40 pm update: Route 81 remained closed in northern New York Tuesday night, but there were signs of improvement.
The extent of the closing narrowed, to the Oswego County line at the southern end, and exit 48, (the Fort Drum area) to the north.
What follows is our reporting from earlier Tuesday on the subject of road closures.
More of Interstate 81 is shut down and part of a major route in Lewis County has also been closed.
Shortly before 9 a.m., Jefferson County officials announced they were closing I81 from the Canadian border to the Jefferson County line.
Officials say they closed the highway because of multiple accidents and white-out conditions.
That closes Route 81 from the border to the exit for Mexico, just north of Syracuse.
State Department of Transportation officials closed the highway
from Exit 45 at Arsenal Street in Watertown to Brewerton starting at 8 p.m. Monday.
Interstate 781, the access highway from I81 to fort Drum, is also closed.
Also closed is State Route 12 between Lowville to Copenhagen.
In the meantime, the DOT is bringing in extra crews to help with the massive snowfall.
Crews have been brought in from Clinton and St. Lawrence counties, increasing the workforce by four plows and eight operators.
Motorists stranded by the snow and road closings can find refuge at the Lowville fire hall.
