Ice Jam Heavily Damages Wanakena Footbridge

Photos posted to our 7 News Facebook page show the historic Wanakena Footbridge has been heavily damaged by an ice jam on the Oswegatchie River.

Built in 1902, the pedestrian suspension bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ice jams have damaged the St. Lawrence County footbridge in the past.

According to our archives, an ice jam in 1999 caused the span to move 8 feet down the river.

The bridge was repaired.

There have been weddings held on it, summer residents use it to get to the Wanakena General Store and kids fish from it.

The ice jam has also caused serious flooding in the hamlet of Wanakena with South Shore Road impassable because of the high waters.
