An infant died after a crash just north of exit 44 on Interstate-81 in the Town of Watertown.

State Police say 21-year-old Quartez Smith was driving south on I-81 near the Watertown Center exit, when he became drowsy.

The 2003 Chevy Trailblazer he was driving, left the road, hit an earth embankment in the median, became air born, and then struck a portable trailer holding an electronic DOT sign which was parked at u-turn #36. After rolling several times, troopers say the vehicle finally came to rest.

Smith and two adult passengers were taken by ambulance to Samaritan Medical and a 5-month-old child was airlifted to Syracuse. The child was later pronounced dead.

Troopers say all occupants of the vehicle were family members who live in Virginia. They were traveling back home after visiting relatives in London, Ontario.

State Police are continuing the investigation.
