Instead Of Cuts, St. Lawrence County Lawmakers Add DMV Positions

Faced with having her budget slashed, St. Lawrence County Clerk Mary Lou Rupp instead convinced legislators to add two positions to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for the coming year.

County lawmakers meeting in Canton Tuesday night had been prepared to cut jobs and close satellite DMV offices in Ogdensburg, Massena and Gouverneur to help cut a projected double-digit tax increase, but instead agreed to increase staff.

The new positions will help generate additional revenue by processing downstate vehicle registrations for New York City-area car dealerships.

Rupp says she expects the county's DMV operation to generate just under $2 million for county coffers in 2013 by handling the downstate registrations.

Last year, the county brought in $1.3 million.

Meanwhile, legislators continued to whittle away a 19 percent tax levy increase by eliminating a vacant senior probation officer position, saving nearly $80,000.
