It's Official: North Country Dairy Is Open

A dairy plant in St. Lawrence County officially re-opened Thursday.

'North Country Dairy' is making yogurt - 46 people are employed there now, with the goal being at least 80 jobs within three years.

The plant was revived by Upstate Niagara Cooperative, after the previous owners shuttered the plant in January 2011.

Upstate Niagara says it invested $11 million in the 90 year old facility.

A ceremonial 'ribbon cutting' was held Thursday to mark the plant's re-opening.

"The basics are here right now to do in excess of a hundred million pounds of yogurt annually," said Lawrence Webster, Upstate Niagara's CEO.

Helping the North Lawrence plant: three megawatts of low cost hydropower relinquished by the former General Motors Powertrain plant in Massena. Also being considered: using natural gas from a St. Lawrence Gas pipeline to Franklin County.
