It's The Holidays! Time For Tom & Jerrys! It's Christmastime in the north country. For many, that means turning to a Watertown holiday tradition: the Tom and Jerry. Since 1919, the Crystal Restaurant has been serving up Tom and Jerrys during the season. "It's absolutely a tradition. It's been going on for several, several years here," said waitress Amy Horton. "Other places try to do it, but nobody can make it just as good as the Crystal Restaurant." So what is a Tom and Jerry? The yuletide drink named for a 19th century book of the same name is cocktail similar to eggnog. It starts with hot water to warm the mug, then the special egg batter. More hot water adds heat, then a shot of rum, a shot of brandy, and a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg top it off. That's the general idea, but the Crystal has a secret family recipe for the batter they've been using since the beginning that they keep under lock and key. "The best way to describe it would be a frothy eggnog type of batter," Horton said. "Nobody knows the secret recipe except for the family, not even myself." For the first time ever, the Crystal this year is selling specially monogrammed mugs. That way, everyone can have a little piece of the Crystal Restaurant and a Watertown Christmas tradition. |
