JCC Fall Classes Begin, Record Enrollment Expected

The fall semester got off to busy start at Jefferson Community College Monday.

From the way it looks right now, there may be more students than ever before.

Although numbers aren't official yet, JCC administration tells us that the school is on track to beat last year's record enrollment of 4,006 students.

Enrollment is expected to be about 1 percent higher than last year.

Freshman Elliot Martin says his decision to attend JCC was a financial decision.

The salutatorian for last year's graduating class at South Lewis Central School, he attends the college for free because he was one of the top 10 percent students in the region.

He's studying engineering.

"I was thinking about going to Clarkson (University), but then I talked to some professors there and they had suggested that I go to a two-year school first, get my basics done and then save a lot of money doing that and then transfer to a bigger four-year school where I can get a great degree but save a lot of money and not have that debt," said Martin.

JCC says its online classes are at near capacity, with more than 90 percent of openings filled for regular semester and early session classes.

Overall, online enrollments have increased more than 20 percent over Fall 2011 online enrollment.

JCC says its military and military-related student population is at about 35 percent of the student body this fall semester.
