Tools

A familiar face at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and Indian River Central School District has retired.

The sheriff's department announced Monday that Deputy Joseph Murtha stepped down after 25 years on the job.

His last day at work was on February 28.

Hired in 1988, Murtha was promoted to detective in 2003 and later assigned to the Metro-Jefferson Drug Task Force.

In September 2008, he became the school resource officer for the Indian River School District - a post he held until his retirement.

Murtha was a general topics instructor and specialized in emergency vehicle operations during his time with the sheriff's department.
