Jury Selection Begins In Child Sex Abuse Trial

Jury selection got underway Tuesday in St. Lawrence County Court in the rape trial of a 37 year old Canton man charged with sexually abusing three young girls.

Richard Thornton is alleged to have had repeated sexual contact with the girls over an eight year period.

The girls were 5, 7 and 9 years old when the alleged abuse began.

Sheriff's detectives said Thornton engaged in sexual contact with the girls that progressively got worse over the years.

He is being tried on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse and sexual conduct against a child.

Thornton has been free since posting $50,000 bail.

He is a well-known businessman in the Canton community.
