Jury Finds Goley Guilty of Manslaughter, Not Murder

After about two hours of deliberation, a Jefferson County jury has found Krista Goley guilty of manslaughter and not the more serious charge of murder.

"We would have liked a better verdict, but I'm glad she wasn't convicted of murder, nor did we necessarily expect it," said Matthew Porter, defense attorney.

The 26 year old Watertown woman was accused in the 2010 stabbing death of her boyfriend, 21 year old Tim Rolland.

Prosecutors said the crime was premeditated.

The defense says it was self-defense.

"I think from the beginning she sort of initiated this self-defense, battered-woman defense, which quite frankly, there's no evidence of," said Aaron Carr, assistant Jefferson County District Attorney.

Deliberations started at 12:08 p.m.

After about 90 minutes, the jury asked to hear the definitions of second-degree murder and first degree manslaughter.

Not long after receiving the definition, the jury found Goley guilty of first-degree manslaughter.

Goley will be sentenced March 16.

She could face five to 25 years in prison for the manslaughter conviction.

Goley was also found guilty of other charges, including criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and perjury.

The prosecution said it would seek consecutive prison terms for the other convictions.

The defense said it planned to appeal the conviction.
