Pressure is mounting to start building housing in the Watertown area.
There isn't enough housing to meet the demand by soldiers stationed at Fort Drum.
"Everybody is looking for a house and everybody is staying in a hotel for a month," said Specialist Louis Rodriguez, a Fort Drum soldier.
The fear is that Fort Drum will lose soldiers if there isn't enough housing, but there's also hope that Fort Drum will gain soldiers if new units are built.
Fort Drum Sergeant First Class Troy Price says the availability doesn't compare to other Army posts he has been to and more housing would certainly make life easier.
"That definitely would be awesome, that would be great for the soldier," said Price.
Many soldiers spend weeks living in hotels while trying to find off-post housing and finding a place on post isn't any easier.
The shortest wait time is for single non-commissioned officers and officers - they can get housing in 1 to 2 months.
Junior NCO's looking for a two-bedroom home can expect to wait 2 to 4 months.
Chief Warrant Officers one as well as junior officers would have to wait over a year for housing on post.
That's all set to change at the end of the year when on-post housing will be provided on a first come, first served basis.
Also set to change at the end of the year is the amount of time newly arriving soldiers receive extra money to pay for things like hotels.
Right now, they get that money for 60 days.
That time period will go down to 10 days.
"It's going to be impossible; a lot of people borrowing money to pay for hotels," said Rodriguez.
