Krog Corporation has been chosen to build the new hotel on the Frink site in the village of Clayton.

Town and village officials announced their decision Friday afternoon.

Officials said it was a unanimous decision.

"We owe a debt of thanks to the local development corporation, the town board and the village board," said Paul Neureuter, chief executive officer of Krog.

The Buffalo company proposed building the $22 million hotel consisting of 104 rooms.

The project also includes 10 to 15 townhouses, which brings the total cost of the project to $26 million.

Krog was the original developer, but after the company didn't publicly advance its plans for almost a year, the town and village of Clayton - along with Clayton's local development corporation - opened up the developer-finding process again.

Clayton Associates, made up of a dozen investors, 10 of whom are Clayton property owners, proposed a hotel that would have a mix of 80 hotel rooms and condominiums.

In the end, officials decided to go with Krog.

"It was clear after our committee did its work, a few days ago we came to that conclusion," said Paul Heckman, Redevelopment Committee chair.

As for Clayton Associates, members expressed disappointment, but no hard feelings.

"We trust the town. We trust the town board and the CLDC and the decision that they made and we support it 100 percent," said Dan Throop, of Clayton Associates.

Krog's initial proposal has been down-scaled a bit.

Its CEO says that's what slowed things down.

"We think we've got the right size project now and we look forward to moving it ahead promptly," said Neureuter. 

There are still hurdles, including site plan review and tax agreements.

Krog hopes to break ground in the spring and complete the project in 2014.
