Legal Docs Owner Hopeful About Chances to Stay Open

Even after a temporary restraining order, legal docs by me in Watertown is still open, with limitations.

"Doors are open and operational in accordance with the recent judgment that the judge signed. We're still continuing to offer business plans to small businesses. We're still able to give out forms to consumers," said Derek Distenfield, Legal Docs by Me CEO.

New York State Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman announced Wednesday Supreme Court Justice James McClusky issued a restraining order, suspending operations at the company's Watertown and Syracuse locations. The court order restricts Legal Docs by Me from doing much more than handing out legal documents for customers to fill out on their own.

"The consequences of receiving erroneous or inadequate legal assistance can spell financial and personal disaster for consumers," said NYS Attorney General Eric Scniederman, in a release earlier this week.

We asked Distenfield what he thought about the attorney general's statements.

"It is empty rhetoric. Legal Docs By Me has been very clear that we do not provide legal advice. We provide forms and preparation services empowering consumers to represent themselves,"

Attorney General Schneiderman first issued a cease and desist order against the company in May, for what he called its "unauthorized practice of law."

Distenfield says he didn't even know about the restraining order until 7 News told him. But he's confident that once he has his day in court, the law will be on the side of Legal Docs By Me.

"We are going to fight this action tooth and nail. We are responding as fast as we can and we are confident that we will prevail once we are given our opportunity in court," said Distenfield

And Distenfield says the sooner he gets that opportunity the sooner his company will prevail, while Schneiderman says he will continue to fight against business owners who quote take advantage of trusting New Yorkers.
