Jefferson County legislators are launching an outside investigation into the sheriff's department.

The legislators went behind closed doors Tuesday night for a nearly two-hour executive session.

At the end, they voted unanimously for an investigation into the sheriff department's handling of a case involving a deputy who had an open  alcoholic container in his car.

Sheriff John Burns spoke briefly with reporters and says he welcomes an outside investigation.

"I'm certainly open to an investigation if that's what it comes to," he said.

Burns gave legislators a written report, which is expected to be made public Wednesday.

The legislators will meet next week to discuss the investigation further.
