Lewis County Has State's Highest Jobless Rate...Again

The north country had some of the highest unemployment rates in New York in March, according to the state Labor Department.

For the second month in a row, Lewis County has the distinction of having the state's highest jobless rate - 12.3 percent.

Jefferson County has the fourth highest rate - 11.5 percent.

There is a bit of good news to report - Lewis County's unemployment rate dropped from 13.2 percent in February, while Jefferson County's rate decreased from 12.2 percent.

St. Lawrence County's jobless rate for March stands at 10.8 percent, down from 11.4 percent in February.

The counties in New York State with the lowest unemployment rates include:

- Tompkins County (5.3%)
- Putnam County (6.3%)
- Nassau County (6.4%)
- Rockland County (6.4%)

The counties in New York State with the highest unemployment rates include:

- Lewis County (12.3%)
- Hamilton County (12.0%)
- Bronx County (11.6%)
- Jefferson County (11.5%)

The state's March jobless rate stands at 8.1 percent, down from 8.8 percent in February.

The March unemployment rate for the nation was 7.6 percent in March, compared to 8.1 percent the month before.
