Charles Fanning, R-District 3, died Saturday evening after experiencing some sort of medical incident while driving to his Deer River Road, Copenhagen home. Legislature chairman Mike Tabolt says, Fanning was returning from the Copenhagen Firemen's Field Days parade in his truck when he had a heart attack. There was no crash, but Fanning was found outside of his home without a pulse by friends and family. He was in the still-running truck left in gear. Fanning was transported to Lewis County General Hospital and pronounced dead there. Tabolt says he will be missed for his common sense approach to public policy. "The way he inspired us just doesn't go away. The mentality, his way of thinking," said Tabolt. "He just instilled it into everyone of us and I'm sure he'll be on our minds for a long time to come." Fanning served the entire town of Denmark and was planning on running for reelection this fall. Mr. Fanning was a retired farmer and an avid Copenhagen sports fan. He graduated from Copenhagen Central and Cornell university in Ithaca. He is survived by his wife Carolyn and four children.
