Little Snow Means Big Savings For SomeThis year, winter has been anything but normal. "It gets pretty monotonous, same old, same old, there's only so many windows you can wash," says Rodman Highway Superintendent Dale Tamblin. But that boredom for the snow plow drivers who keep the roads clean, means saved dollars for highway departments on the state, county, and town levels. In Rodman, the highway department is still using the leftover salt and sand from last year, overtime pay is down significantly and so is the amount of diesel fuel used. "We ended up running 50 days straight last winter. This winter we could go a whole week without moving the plows," adds Tamblin. It's the same in towns across the North Country, In Rutland, officials report their total miles traveled by plows is down by 50% from last year. While, the lack snowfall is saving towns and counties money, it's a different story for private contractors. Jake's Lawn Care contracts snow removal for the year and works on a pay per-plowing basis. The contract money is guaranteed, but there are significantly less calls for individual snow removal jobs. "From a business point of view, you would normally be out removing snow banks, but without the snow, people don't need the service," says Jason Deline, an employee at Jake's Lawn Care. With less than two months until the official start of Spring, there's still plenty of time for old man winter to make his mark on the North Country. |
