Local Lawmakers May Call For Repeal Of Gun Control Law

Jefferson County Legislators may be asked in the coming weeks to vote on a resolution calling for a repeal of parts of the New York's gun control law.

The NY SAFE Act recently passed by the legislature and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo has come under increasing scrutiny and public backlash. 

Jefferson County Legislator Bobby Ferris says the measure was rushed through Albany and doesn't reflect the opinions of the people he represents.

Ferris says he wants to send a message even if the resolution isn't binding on state lawmakers.

"If the people don't stick up for their rights, they'll be taken away from them. My job is to stick up for the people's rights and that's what I'm doing. If it takes one county at a time to do it, then we'll do it one county at a time and eventually, I believe, Albany will get the message," said Ferris (R. - District 11).

Fellow Republican Legislator John Peck says he also wants to send a message to state lawmakers that approval of the NY SAFE Act was improper. 

A resolution drawn up in Ulster County is expected to be basis for any resolution Jefferson County lawmakers may vote on.
