Local Man Creates Whimsical "Third Legs"

Tools

If you need a cane to help you get around, but don't like the typical models available, you may want to consider My 3rd Leg, a whimsical walking stick designed right here in the north country.

It was 18 years ago at age 51 that Bob Parow was told he needed both hips replaced and it was recommended that he use a cane in the meantime.

"I wanted to have a cane where people said - instead of "here comes the old man," "here comes that guy with the cool cane," he said.

So he put his woodworking skills to the test designing a cane while at the same time researching his hip surgery.

He came up with the idea of of making a cane resembling a leg bone.

The cane was so cool that he started making them to sell.

His 3rd Leg design has since been patented and the canes are now mass produced out of a polycarbonate.

Several finishing options are available.

My 3d Leg canes have been sold all over the United States and beyond.

"I've sold canes in Belgium, Australia, England, Germany and Canada," said Parow.

The basic white model sells for $79.95.

They are also sold with a decorative coating or can be custom hand-painted at a higher price.

These canes are on display at Innovative Physical Therapy Solutions in Watertown.

Next week we'll talk to the folks there to find out how to know if a cane is the right fit for you.
