Look What's Missing From Watertown Farmer's Market

It was a beautiful day for the first farmer's market of the season.

There were flowers, wine and even kettle corn for sale.

But when you walk down the strip, Fido is greeted by a clear message - he's not allowed.

"Dogs are prohibited, within a certain number of feet from any public event on city owned property," said Watertown City Councilwoman Roxanne Burns.

Burns introduced the dog-banning legislation to city council.

She was motivated by an incident at last year's farmer's market, when a toddler was viciously attacked by an American bulldog.

Burns wants to make sure it never happens again.

"I love dogs. At the end of the day, they are still animals and there's a time and a place for them and crowded public venues are not the place," she said.

"Dogs can get aggravated with all these people here and I just think it's safer if they're in their own environment," said Susan O'Dell, who likes the new dog ban.

In addition to the dog law, there may be parking issues at this year's farmer's market.

The Dulles State Office Building parking garage will be closed on Friday and then the employees who park there will have to park elsewhere.

It's already competitive.

But organizers think the parking situation won't be that bad.

"When you look around at our crowd, a lot of the people that attend the market are local business people that work downtown. They're parked at their business and they walk over," said Michelle Farrell of the Greater Watertown - North Country Chamber of Commerce.

No pooches are allowed and there's a possibility of a dogfight for parking, so plan accordingly.

The farmer's market will be held every Wednesday through October.
