Low Water Levels Worry Rafters on Black River

A mild winter plus a dry summer have added up to lower water levels and big worries for white water rafters on the Black River.

Thanks to the lack of rain, in Watertown, the river is running at about half the cubic feet per second it usually does this time of year.

If water levels go too low, rafting companies may be forced to cancel trips.

And although the water levels aren't causing problems of that magnitude for rafters yet, they're certainly keeping a close eye on them.

"You know, once it starts to get to a certain point - not that the trip is reduced in quality, but it becomes more difficult to do," said Bob Peterson, B.O.B Rafting owner.

"There are more rocks that show up. Things are a little bit more technical," he explained.

On the bright side, though, Peterson says the recent hot weather has created a bit of a boom for his business. He says hot weather simply brings rafters out.
