Lowville Street Is Nameless No LongerNot found on maps or a GPS, for years it was a street in the heart of the village of Lowville without street signs. That's because the piece of pavement never actually had a name. After asking residents for help, village board members named the formerly nameless street Monument Lane, tying in key features found along the street. "The church itself is its own monument, obviously, with a lot of deeper meaning in many different ways, shapes and forms," said Mayor Donna Smith, "but also the monument that goes along with the little green space there is something that we're very proud of." Some of the rejected names we Memorial Drive, Memorial Lane, Davis Memorial Drive (after the late judge and village resident George Davis), Unity Way, and Cross Street. Cross Street, officials say, almost won out. "Somebody actually made the motion to accept Cross Street as the name of our street and there was no second." Smith said. So, Monument Lane it is. The street signs should be up sometime later this summer. |
