Major Renovations Planned For Watertown Arena
A quick tour of the Fairgrounds Arena shows a nearly 40 year old facility that needs some work.
"This arena hasn't been renovated since it was built in 1975," said Erin Gardner, Parks and Recreation superintendent.
It looks like city leaders agree on a $3.6 renovation plan.
They're looking to hire an engineer to design the project.
"What we would like with the new plans is to have a big open lobby where people can walk in and there's plenty of space and it's welcoming," said Gardner.
Major work would include a new roof, possibly a new floor, more rest rooms and solving the locker room problem that has plagued sports teams like the Privateers.
But it would not include a second sheet of ice.
Major upgrades to the arena have been talked about for quite some time.
Now it looks like this year is when the wheels will be put in motion.
"It's the only regional recreational facility of its kind in the immediate Watertown area. I think it's important that it be kept in good shape," said city Mayor Jeff Graham.
The project is in the city budget's five year plan.
The money would be borrowed and repaid over 15 years.
If the design gets done this year, much of the work could begin in 2014.
